Requiem Mediterraneo is a missa pro defunctis in memory of the migrants who fell on the routes of our sea, composed by Sebastiano Cognolato for white voice, tenor, soprano, choir, piano and mimes on stage. The opera is in memory of the children’s shipwreck that occurred on October 11th 2013 off the coast of Lampedusa island, in which 260 migrants died, 150 of whom minors. Requiem Mediterraneo is inspired by the story of Mabrouk, who was born on the barge and died a few hours later at sea.
In Requiem Mediterraneo, Mabrouk and the many victims of that terrible shipwreck ideally come back to life, rise up from the bottom of the sea and walk towards Europe to invoke justice. They point the finger against inadequate regulations, against our no-actions; they turn to God not only to be welcomed, but also to ask, humanly speaking, for vengeance.
Intende Voci Chorus was the protagonist of this world premiere, staged at the Triennale Teatro Milano on October 3rd under the patronage of UNHCR, Fondazione Cariplo and the Municipality of Milan and with the collaboration of many non-profit organizations and associations dedicated to welcoming and raising awareness on the issue of immigration.
